Meet Sérgio Fernandez

Seating & Mobility Related Challenges
Sérgio, a 47-year-old male with 85% TBSA burns and 95% permanent disability, faced major functional barriers including severe musculoskeletal and respiratory impairments, reduced fine motor control, and total reliance on a wheelchair. He experienced high risk of pressure injuries, postural instability, discomfort, and pain due to inadequate seating and mobility solutions. His manual wheelchair lacked adjustability and proper pressure relief, leading to increased risk of skin breakdown and limited independence. Environmental barriers, such as slopes near his home, further restricted his mobility.
Psychosocially, Sérgio suffered from PTSD, depression, and social isolation, compounded by heat intolerance and hypersensitivity.
Seating & Mobility Related Outcomes
The introduction of the Permobil F5 Corpus VS power wheelchair, combined with ROHO® Contour Select cushion and ROHO ® Adaptor Pads, addressed Sérgio’s critical seating and mobility needs. The new system provided effective pressure redistribution, improved comfort, and enhanced postural stability. Power standing and advanced seating functions enabled independent repositioning, reducing pressure injury risk and increasing functional independence. Sérgio reported greater comfort, improved reach, and the ability to overcome environmental barriers.
Psychosocially, the intervention boosted his confidence and motivation for social participation. This case highlights the importance of personalized, multidisciplinary interventions and advanced assistive technology in managing complex seating and mobility challenges for individuals with severe disabilities.
