Meet Scott, a F5 VS user since November 2019

Meet Scott: A community activist, clinical psychologist, and pet owner who resides in Mississippi, United States. Scott met with us to discuss his experience with mobility equipment over the past ten years.

Scott is living with Multiple Sclerosis, which presents with fluctuating symptoms from day to day and so the impact to his daily life will vary as well.

Looking at the way equipment impacts the whole person, here are a few considerations that Scott has to keep in mind when selecting and using his power wheelchair:

Body functions and structures (physical and anatomical)

Muscle weakness in arms and legs that is progressive
Spasticity that increases throughout the day
History of pressure injury on his sacrum from previous equipment
Motor and Cognitive fatigue
Difficulty with verbal communication

Activities (tasks or actions to complete)

Dressing himself
Transferring to the bed or commode/toilet
Preparing meals, which he only eats once a day to conserve energy
Standing (for exercise and health, not for functional tasks)
Caring for his home and pets
Grocery shopping

Participation (involvement in life)

Past Chairperson with various organizations including Mississippi Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities and National MS Society
Volunteer with City of Jackson ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)

Environment & Personal Factors

Lives in a home in an urban setting in Mississippi, USA
Pets: Maggie & Misty
Has a ramp built to accommodate 2 steps into his home, internal doorways are very narrow due to age of the home
Uses public transportation primarily
Late 50s
Current equipment: Permobil F5 Corpus VS with ROHO® single valve cushion.

“It is wonderful, wonderful! My previous chair didn’t go up and down at all, it didn’t stand at all so I couldn’t reach things I wanted to reach, so I would have to ask a passerby to help me and if there is no one around I just didn't get it. So, my food choices were dependent of what I could reach, I was dependent on most things. For me it is very very helpful.”

Outcome 1 clinical benefits

Research shows:

- Seat elevation and standing enhance ADLs (11,12)
- Seat elevation increases vertical reach (18)
- Anterior tilt promotes a neutral pelvic position and active reach functionality, thereby enhancing independent activities of daily living (17)

Scott has designed the city of Jackson with Lego bricks to better understand accessibility and pedestrian needs with his “Keep Building Jackson” project.

“It is the BEST thing that’s happened to me in a decade…improves my functioning by allowing me to stay seated LONGER and gives me the mobility I need to get out of bed, live independently, remain productive, and MOSTLY self-sufficient.  I can also engage in important societal volunteer work by serving on many boards and committees.”

Outcome 2 clinical benefits

Research shows:

- Seat elevate and standing enhance visual orientation (6,7)
- Standing has a positive impact on mental health and quality of life (19)
- Power mobility can increase quality of life (8)

“The fact that I can stay in the chair longer, more hours per day, is a massive improvement in my functioning and two my quality of life, …The bottom line is that I can sit in front of my computer and be more productive in this chair than I could my old chair and much longer a non-CRT chair.”

Outcome 3 clinical benefits

Research shows:

- Posterior tilt enables pressure redistribution. This may decrease the risk of pressure injury (1)
- The combination of tilt, recline & legs elevation enables pressure redistribution. This may decrease the risk of pressure injury (2)
- Standing enables pressure redistribution. This may decrease the risk of pressure injury (3)
- Tilt, legs & recline help with repositioning which can reduce pain and discomfort (14)
